liverpool temporarily take the lead in the premier league after an important 1-0 victory over fulham last night.
fulham fielded the same squad that beat manchester united, but were totally outplayed by a strong liverpool performance. the reds were unlucky not to score more goals with numerous players hitting the woodwork. the game appeared to be headed towards a stalemate before late substitute, yossi benayoun, found the net from close range during injury time.
the result puts liverpool on top with a two point lead. however, man united have two games in hand and are likely to reclaim the number one position after their match against aston villa.
in three days, liverpool face a rejuvenated chelsea team in their first of two champions league matches. liverpool then host blackburn rovers and arsenal as the reds continue the chase for the premier league title.
in other news, steven gerrard has agreed a contract extension that will commit him to liverpool until 2013. after benitez signed his own 5 year deal last month, the liverpool skipper was quick to agree to terms worth 26 million pounds. gerrard’s career will likely finish at liverpool, which the liverpool born player has always said was his ambition.
kuyt also signed a new contract and it’s hoped that (with benitez, gerrard and kuyt signing new contracts) other liverpool players will sign new deals too … in particular, spanish trio torres, alonso and reina.
